In fact, they're no different than some of the ATV-maintained hiking trails at Wind Cave National Park and other prairie parks, except that there are no blazes, and there are lots of forks, and occasionally a two track becomes a single cattle trail or no trail at all. Deer Haven is a 2.5-mile (one way) unmarked trail, although there is a relatively worn path to follow. It's two-thirds of a mile, round trip. No engines hum. As darkness began, I walked and scooped sardines (dines in the shorthand of the initiated) with my pocketknife from a can. Our route took us out of the park, through the village of Scenic, which was anything but -- rusted-out cars, boarded-over windows -- and then onto the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, home of the Oglala Sioux, the tribal descendants of Crazy Horse. Fifty-six species of grass grow in Badlands Park, and if we'd had time, I think Dean would've told us a story about each one. A second ranger said that before we could even enter the other two units we'd need permission to cross private land. A venture into through the parks remote terrain can be a real treat that provides endless photographic opportunities. At the end of the trail, there are a few locations to set up camp: in the prairie at the base of the buttes, on top of the buttes, or in Deer Haven, the grove of junipers halfway up the buttes for which the trail is named. A toadstool rock, which consists of a large, resistant block being held up by a narrow column of softer rock beneath which has eroded away, sits in a valley of badlands formations with green prairie in the background. Close to the transition of the North Unit to the South Unit is an unpaved, high-clearance vehicles only road leading up to Sheep Mountain Table. South Unit Ranger Richard Sherman had previously guided me to a freshwater spring about 14-15 miles, by foot, from the start. The park sprawls across 244,000 acres, half of it within the Pine Ridge. An array of extinct animals, from enormous to very small, once ranged the area now in Badlands National Park. The Sage Creek Rim Road departs the Badlands Loop Road to the west, just south of the Pinnacles Entrance. In addition, Badlands National Park also includes a small "island" of land that is not contiguous with the main park. This is where I started. But now youre here. We bounced along the horrible roads, which were really little more than mud slicks cut across the grasslands, and, after making only one wrong turn, managed to drive to the edge of Stronghold Table. About a quarter mile in, this second road climbed atop a hill yielding spectacular 360 views of the badlands and a lucky group of free-range mustangs. Nevertheless, the park reports that hundreds of fossils are found each year by visitors, with 375 fossils reported in 2019 alone. Sage Creek Rim Road connects the Badlands Loop Road with Highway 44 to the South. The thicker western side of the North Unit contains Sage Creek Rim Road, a 30-mile dirt gravel road going through the 64,000-acre Badlands Wilderness Area. In 1890 as many as a thousand Sioux participated in a religious ritual called the Ghost Dance, a marathon ceremony during which the dancers believed that they became invincible, impervious even to bullets. A high-clearance 4WD is a must here. This caused the land under the sea to rise, forcing the water to retreat and drain away. Before the northbound BIA 42 crosses the Cheyenne River, theres a dirt road on the right. ''When a bus stops in, we don't want everyone all fussin' about and using it -- our tank gets filled up,'' explained Nellie. It includes the 64,000-acre Badlands Wilderness Area, Badlands Loop Road with scenic overlooks and trailheads, and Cedar Pass, where you will find the Ben Reifel Visitor Center, open year-round, and Cedar Pass Lodge, open seasonally. Dig a small hole 6 to 8 inches deep and a minimum of 200 feet from any water source. The badlands is one of the world's most rapidly changing landscapes: on average the formations lose an inch every year, but new badlands are forming as the old ones melt away. It is roughly the shape of a spoon, with the handle to the east and the bowl to the west. The best time to visit is probably late August, September or October, when the weather is mild, the crowds are thin, and there is little rain. The small amounts of water found are not drinkable or filterable due to the high sediment content. Eons passed. The final section discusses human history in the park, including narratives of paleo-Indians, Lakota, and homesteaders. Anything that is shallow -- the easy optimism of the homesteader the tress whose roots don't reach groundwater -- will dry up and blow away." The prairie is greenish-yellow, colored this way from a mixture of grasses and yellow sweet clover. The Sioux called them ''mako sica''; early French trappers referred to areas as ''les mauvaises terres'' -- both mean ''bad lands,'' a place where erosive forces have eaten deep into soft soils and formed a wild landscape of improbably shaped hills and ridges, useless for all human endeavors save gazing upon. The campground has pit toilets, but there is no running water. The Lakota Sioux called it Maco Sica. Others come to camp, photograph wildlife, or search for birds or flowers. Crickets began calling and bats wheeled about, and for a few minutes beneath the nearly full moon coyotes wailed and yipped. Chimney spires as gangly as Nosferatu-fingers. When you drive the Badlands Loop Road, you will find overlooks and signs explaining the landscape.
